Formative Assessment Training Day ONE - RCOE / 11 attendees
Limited Capacity filling up

Assessment for Learning: Understanding and Using Formative Assessment with California Standards

As schools shift their practices to align with the Common Core learning standards, a sharper focus on the role of classroom assessment has emerged. Although this support will include information about California’s new statewide assessments, it will primarily address local, teacher, and school/district-driven assessments. Participants will experience a variety of formative assessment “scenarios” from various content areas in order to better understand how formative assessment can and must be an integral part of our educational programs.

During this two-day interactive training (Oct 13 & Nov 13, 2017), participants will:• Develop an understanding of the formative assessment process.• Define the attributes of the formative assessment process (clarifyinglearning, eliciting evidence, interpreting evidence, and acting on evidence) . ..• Develop an understanding of the fundamentals of learning includingparticipating and contributing, making meaning, and managing learning.• Develop an understanding of the classroom culture that supports formativeassessment practices including teacher-student and student-studentfeedback, and peer and self-assessment.• Connect formative assessment to lesson design.• Connect formative assessment to California Standards and the buildingblocks of learning (lesson progressions).

Student-Centered Teaching Strategies
Limited Capacity seats available

It's one thing to talk about student-centered education, but what does this actually look like in practice? Tim Bedley will model best practices that put the students at the center of your classroom. Strategies will include Reaching Consensus, Explosion! Student Led Discussions, and Gallery Learning. This workshop will engage participants. Tim's no-nonsense teacher trainings, that never focus on PowerPoint or presenter lectures, have been well-received at school districts across the U.S.

Formative Assessment Training Day TWO - RCOE / 11 attendees

Classroom Management: The First Step to Effective Teaching
Limited Capacity seats available

All the best teachers at any school have one thing in common—they are great classroom managers. This professional development will help you manage your classroom so you can make a difference and feel like you’re enriching the lives of your students. It explains how real students respond to lessons, not the perfect students in teaching textbooks. Few books outlining classroom management clarify how to handle students when lessons don’t go as planned, but this hour will help you stop the problems before they happen, or minimize the explosive behavior. The system of creating a wolf pack will transform your class into a thriving learning environment.

Join us for a 2-day training focused on how to identify appropriate social skills to teach students regardless of your role in the school, or the difficulty of the student.

  • Learn how to create and maintain safe environments
  • Discover the correlations between student behavior and academic performance
  • Discuss researched and proven components of efficient classroom management
  • Acquire behavior management techniques, including observation and preparation, that will help prevent disruption and maintain a culture of calm.
  • Gain tools to correct inappropriate behavior immediately and understand the effectiveness of using praise more often than correction to shape behavior.

PEC's Level I (Invite only)
Limited Capacity seats available

This intensive two-day training is designed to teach participants the theory behind the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) and the protocols for how to appropriately implement the six phases of PECS.

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is used to rapidly teach communication skills to those with limited functional speech. PECS promotes communication within a social context, without lengthy prerequisite training. Training in PECS begins by teaching a spontaneous request and goes on to teach additional communicative functions such as responding to questions and commenting. An added attraction for preschool children with autism and related disabilities is the high proportion of children who acquire independent speech. Participants will learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, plus attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with an understanding of how to implement PECS with individuals with autism, related developmental disabilities, and/or limited communication skills.
